MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- A $100 million museum honoring the nation's Medal of Honor recipients will be built at a South Carolina military attraction.
Officials announced Wednesday that the museum will be built on land at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant. The attraction plans a massive fundraising drive to replace a smaller museum now on board the site's major attraction, the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.
The museum will take five years to build and will be accompanied by a new hotel and a conference center. Officials say the development will make Patriots Point an international destination and add at least 200,000 visitors to the 5 million people who visit the Charleston each year.
Officials say they will spend an additional $2 million upgrading the USS Yorktown.
