— A Lancaster County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after an inmate he was transporting cut him in the neck with a razor Wednesday morning.
Investigator Fred Thompson, who leads the sheriff's office's gang unit, was taken to a nearby hospital, said Sheriff Barry Faile.
Thompson was escorting 20-year-old Keith Robinson to an interview room where deputies planned to question him about other crimes they suspect him to be involved with, Faile said. After Robinson began complaining about the shackles around his legs, Thompson stooped down to examine them.
That's when Robinson removed the blade from a razor given to him by the detention center and slashed Thompson on his neck.
Thompson called for assistance but managed to detain Robinson before back-up arrived, Faile said.
Lancaster County Detention Center inmate cut a deputy with a razor Wednesday morning.
Thompson received stitches, "but other than that, he's doing fine," Faile said.
In late June, police arrested Robinson in connection with the murder of 54-year-old Donald E. Morris, who was found dead in his South York Street home on June 18.
Officials then charged Robinson with murder, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and first-degree burglary.
Police later arrested four more men in connection with Morris' murder. Police also accused Robinson of a June 13 home invasion and armed robbery against Morris.
Robinson was charged with armed robbery and first-degree burglary, and Campbell was charged with accessory to armed robbery and accessory to first-degree burglary. A State Law Enforcement Division records check shows that Robinson was arrested in 2009 for assault and battery with the intent to kill.
The S.C. Judicial Department shows that the charge was dismissed a month later.
In April 2011, he was arrested for purse snatching. Then in October, police arrested him for driving without a license and charged him with two counts of hit and run. In December, he was arrested for resisting arrest and unlawfully carrying a weapon, according to records. Records with the state judicial department shows that all of these charges were still pending in court at the time Robinson was accused of murder.
Officials anticipate that Robinson will now face an attempted murder charge, Faile said, in addition to other pending charges.
