The history of this state is very long. Some English settlers, who helped King Charles in regaining his throne, first settled the colony of Carolina. At that time, Spanish people occupied some part of the colony but they had to retreat when the war broken out between the local Americans and the Spanish people. It was not a planned land, rather it was divided into two parts - northern and southern parts-, and formally, in 1729 it turned into two royal colonies- Norths Carolina and South Carolina. On March 26, 1776, both the colonies set up their own government and started acting as independent states. The current United States Constitution was proposed for adaptation on September 17, 1787 and South Carolina was the eighth state to ratify it on May 23, 1788.
